Beginning Spinning on the Spindolyn
Dear Mollianne,

Although it was in the forties this morning, my daughter had her first baseball game at 8 AM. She is four years old and was prepared with pink baseball socks, a pink helmet, a pink bat, and a striped pink turtleneck to go with her white tights under her white baseball pants. The team shirt is purple with white letters. The only girl on the team, it was easy to spot Clara on the field. With a hit from the first pitch, my daughter became a baseball player.

I know this is a busy time of year with sports, graduations, church events, fund-raising events and much more. It is also nice to take a little time for the fiber arts. Knit a prayer shawl for a friend or family member. Make an afghan for a graduating senior. Learn to crochet.

Most importantly, pass on the tradition we love so much. Help a 4-H member, start a knitting club, or make something and wear it with pride.

Stitches & Scones is truly a gathering place for support and friendship. Thanks so much for all of your visits and kindness.

KNITTING ANATOMY WORKSHOP
Every knitter must understand the "anatomy & physiology" of knitting...the basic "structure" of the stitches and knitted fabric and how all the "processes" affect the finished garment. In this 2-hr workshop, we will take a practical look at the knit and purl stitches, how to pick up dropped stitches, tips for choosing, and then interpreting a pattern, yarn choice gauge, and choosing the appropriate methods of casting-on, increasing, and decreasing. (No supplies needed. May practice stitch techniquies on scrap yarn if desired. Class notes provided.)

CONTINENTAL KNITTING WORKSHOP
This workshop is designed for those who already knit using the English style of holding the working yarn in their right hands. With the Continental style, the working yarn is held in the left hand and can be worked successfully regardless of which hand is dominant. Many knitters have found the Continental style to be faster, easier on the hands, and a useful skill for stranded colorwork--holding one color in each hand. Come try your hand and see!

Location: Crafty Capers
Instructor: Chris Gilbert
Cost: $15

SWALLOWTAIL LACE SHAWL
Originally published in the Fall '06 issue of Interweave Knits, the Swallowtail was a finalist in the Best of Interweave Knits Readers' Choice Awards contest in the spring of 2008. A border of Lily of the Valley adds an interesting counterpoint to the tiny budding lace pattern at the top of this small shawl. It ends with a scalloped edging, and the lace throughout has an Estonian influence. (You will learn how to work the beloved nupp...the creation of a small flower bud out of one stitch for the Lily-of-the-Valley.) This shawl looks great in both solid and semi-solid color lace, fingering, and Shetland/sport/DK wight yarns. Tips for succesful lace knitting incorporated throughout.

Thursdays, June 3 & 10, 6-8 PM
Location: Crafty Capers
Instructor: Chris Gilbert
Cost: $30
